Cycle Game
Lost in Echoes:
I choose the cycle of time travel between two distinct worlds: literacy culture or the 1990s century world and the digital, pixelated world. The title I set in my game depicts my struggles and helplessness about how digital media and electronic devices have influenced people's lives. 'Lost in Echoes,"' Boundaryless' and 'Revolution' both shape the concept of intertwined relationships between the physical, realistic world and virtual, online, and digital interaction in our daily lives. It is nostalgic and additive but also unavoidable to drift social media, the internet, and digital things away from human society today. In this cycle game, I want to showcase the power of the digital world and how our human perception is shaped by the medium we consume. As McLuhan'ss classical theory states," The medium is the message." The rebellious main character wants to leave her pixelated, perfect, digitalized world and longs to go to the real, human world, drawing the contrast between how people feel overwhelmed by the internet, where physical interactions are necessary. I appreciate that my friends gave me helpful advice and feedback to improve my game. The game is engaging, but they suggest I emphasize the book's uniqueness more and accentuate my character's desire to stay in the human world and struggle to live in her original, digitalized world.
Twine Game Darkside Of the Moon
In my detective game, I picked the obsession of earning big money as a life goal for my character. I place the money in the first place not because I am a self-centered, interest-oriented person but because I want to express more about the despair, stress, and pain that I have been suffering and experiencing in this capitalist, secular world. Reality drove me to consider things more practically and realistically, which overwhelms me. The player can experience stressful, inhuman feelings and vibes when playing my main character, 'I,' the well-known, smart private detector that helps people solve criminal cases. My whole story criticizes and emphasizes that the person who places interest and money in their first place of life can end up very lonely and mentally feeling empty inside their spiritual world. 'Detectiveland' is the sample structure I chose to work on as my creative writing project for this class. It is a text-based, deductive story that asks the player to solve criminal cases. The game allows the player to make up the story in the middle but also controls them to follow the instructions or achieve the game's goal. Greg's definition of a game helps me to understand the importance of making the player struggle to achieve the game and offering them freedom, but also letting them under control is the main formula for a good game. Even though the game is designed for fun, it's a meaningful experience that lets the player truly experience the environment, the situation of the scenes, and the story. Related to Nat Mesnard's lecture, it's helpful to make more people play my game so they can give me authentic feedback as a game player.
